The real kinship among genres today is less between the memoir and the novel and more between memoir and poetry. We make a mistake in thinking of memoir as nonfiction. It's really nonpoetry. I don't think we can understand the strong impulse of the memoir if we look only to fiction for its roots.

Generelt virker det som om amerikansk (mainstream)litteratur er mange år bagefter Norden/Europa hvor kunsten har været intenst "reality-based" mindst 10-20 år nu, hvis vi ikke skal spole tilbage til de historiske avantgarder, og det skal vi selvfølgelig. Frustrerende læsning, Mr Shields. Rapport fra en amerikansk sæbeboble. Er det de mange creative writing-kurser som producerer al den triste (og helt unavngivne) fiktion som Shields reagerer imod?
